A hypnotherapist's path to success

In the spring of 2001, I swung open the doors on my first hypnotherapy practice. It was an exciting moment, full of optimism and a desire to help people overcome their problems.

But I had no concept of what the next six months would be like.  "Deflating" is a good word.  "Shock" is perhaps more accurate. 

I wasn't totally blinded by my optimism - I knew it was going to "take some time” to get things going.  But it never happened.  Time didn't give my business any legs.

In my fifth month I had zero clients.  Sixth month, just two clients.  Nothing that came from the leaflets.  Nothing from the newspaper ad.

Not knowing what else I could do, I poured more money into advertising.  I ran a new ad in the paper, twice a week instead of once and I had a student post my leaflets all over the surrounding neighborhood.

Not a single booking came from these efforts.

Naturally, my confidence plummeted.  I came to the conclusion that potential clients obviously didn't believe that I could help them solve their problems.  And perhaps they were right.  Maybe I wasn't qualified enough or maybe I just wasn't cut out for this type of work.

I felt so foolish for being so naive when I opened the doors that day.  Just because there were lots of people who needed help, it didn't necessarily mean they needed my help. 

I faced the grim possibility of closing my business.

I was duped!

At that time there was a conference on hypnotherapy nearby.  I decided to attend - more as a distraction than anything.   

The conference itself didn't offer up any solutions to my problems but while there I met long-time hypnotherapist, Shaun Brookhouse.  He'd been practicing successfully since 1989.

After the conference I got in touch with Shaun. You see, I knew I was doing something wrong - I just didn't know what it was, exactly. Was I giving clients what they needed? It was hard to know how to give them the right care.

Shaun took me under his wing and gave me serious mentoring. Every month I would drive up to Manchester for the day and Shaun would help me take the next step.

I was amazed how fast his teachings turned things around. With his suggestions, I started getting regular bookings. 

This was the revelation that I had been duped. Way down in the wiring of my neural synapses I had come to believe that a person either had the skills to run a business OR be a good hypnotherapist…but never both.

I guess I wanted to be a real hypnotherapist.  And for some reason that meant I shouldn't be good at business and marketing.  The irony was that I was good at it - I had two successful businesses before getting into hypnotherapy.  

Shaun was the unequivocal proof I needed to drop this bias which was pushing me into bankruptcy.  He had a highly profitable practice, he was compassionate, and had an incredible track record of treatment success.  His view of marketing was that it was simply a necessary stepping stone on the path to help people.  This in turn made him a good living.

He inspired me to get serious and use my business and marketing skills as a means to help people.  The result of this was a profitable and sustainable hypnotherapy business.
 

Opening the floodgates...

This was 2001 and I had a website, but it wasn't getting any traffic.  The art of search engine optimization (SEO) was a pretty new thing at that time.

I dug through cyber-space until I found the seminal treatise, "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone," by Brett Tabke at Webmaster World.

Within a couple of months, I held number one rankings for many hypnotherapy search terms worldwide.  But I still wasn't getting many bookings that came from the website.

But after dropping the limiting bias, I was able to apply sound business and marketing strategies to my hypnotherapy website - that opened the floodgates... 

From then on, my hypnotherapy practice was booked solid two months in advance.  At least 20% did not want to wait so I referred them to colleagues.  The website was getting so much traffic I started selling CDs directly from the site - I sold 30 CDs per week!  And I also added Adsense (advertising for other businesses) on the site to profit from the huge amount of traffic.

I remember celebrating New Year's eve, 2004 and looking back at the first two and a half years of my hynpotherapy business - aghast at how far down I'd sunk...and then how far up I went. 

Freedom! (Finally!)

I was sipping champagne and Ruth looked at me.  I smiled.  With a sustainable and profitable business we were totally free to do what we wanted.

Now we could turn our dreams into reality.  We picked up and moved from the Oxford, U.K. to Christchurch, New Zealand...which is where I am right now.   Truly, we are living our dream.
